Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry

Armed with an overhead projector, a microphone, and dozens of ornately illustrated transparencies, Daniel Barrow turns his hour-long multimedia presentation Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry into more than just the sum of its parts. The Winnipeg-based artist uses a delightfully anachronistic "manual animation" technique — parading an assembly line of illustrations across the projector screen by hand — to tell the macabre story of a garbage man who moonlights as a DIY outsider artist. The fantastical images are transfixing by themselves, but the accompanying score and Barrow's own narration give the presentation an epic, filmic quality.
