With their smart mouths and hyperactive wit, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey have already proven irresistible as a comic team, most memorably as the SNL Weekend Update anchors. In Baby Mama, Fey portrays an infertile, uptight businesswoman who selects the junk-food-swilling, trash-talking Poehler as a surrogate mom. The film rarely disappoints, even if its class politics are a little funky. Fey's self-loathing acid translates well for her first leading role, and perky Poehler remains the best off-the-cuff comedienne working onscreen today. Even better, oddly, is Steve Martin, who clocks in his sharpest performance in years as the creepy new-age CEO of a Whole Foods-like corporation.
