Film Double Indemnity (1944)
-
- Double Indemnity
Double Indemnity is the quintessential film noir — a pitch-black whirlwind of double entendres and triple crosses in which Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray plot to kill her husband and collect the insurance. Director Billy Wilder solidified all of the genre's hallmarks: the doomed cuckold, the bewitching femme fatale, the moody lighting, and the perfect crime. Even Edward G. Robinson's fraud investigator feels like a precursor to the chatty, matter-of-fact modern heroes like Dale Cooper and Margie Gunderson. The Wilder- and Raymond Chandler-penned script is tough as nails, and the grimy LA locale is ugly as homemade sin.
