Music Box Theatre says…

Two years after McCabe and Mrs. Miller took apart the Western's Monument Valley mystique, Robert Altman turned his deconstructionist wrench on the Hollywood detective noir for 1973's The Long Goodbye. Readers of the Raymond Chandler novel — this year's One Book, One Chicago selection — might be surprised by the radically reworked plot. Altman dropped and added characters. Elliott Gould's Philip Marlowe is a muttering anti-Bogart. And Chandler's original hardboiled atmosphere gets refitted in '70s pastel and polyester. Some critics cried blasphemy, but Altman's ambiguous malaise now seems like the perfect tonal match for the Watergate decade.
