Hanah Jon Taylor is a resident of Madison, but he's no stranger to Chicago's jazz scene; until a few years ago, he had a regular Thursday night at the Velvet Lounge with Art Ensemble of Chicago bassist Malachi Favors. Taylor's a master of the piano-less jazz trio, easily filling the openness of the format with strongly but freely grooving lines or unpredictable blasts of sound. His return tonight is a welcome one, as his virtuosity on tenor and soprano sax (Coltrane and Dolphy come to mind), singular intensity on flute (vocalizations and unconventional scales abound), and completely original sound on the rarely heard Yamaha Wind Synthesizer have been sorely missed.
