Seldoms artistic director and choreographer Carrie Hanson is one of the most ambitious, exacting artists in the local scene. Not afraid of attacking topical material or working closely with collaborators from outside dance circles, Hanson takes an unexpected approach to environmentalism in Monument. In the piece, Hanson treats landfills as architecture, "buildings" of garbage that house the residue of people's aspirations and failures. The dancers dissect the trash's psychological representations through myriad influences and broken, distorted visions of beauty. A post-show discussion includes green designers from local firm UrbanLab and object artist Barbara Hashimoto.
