Winner of the 1982 Tony Award for Best Musical, Nine is based on Italian director Federico Fellini's classic film 8 1/2. Fellini's title reflected the number of films in his oeuvre at the time, with the 1/2 representing a co-directorial credit; Maury Yeston, the 1982 theatrical director, assigned Fellini another half a credit when the show opened on Broadway. The musical follows a famous director as he struggles with the plot for his next film, while being pursued by a bevy of women all clamoring for his love and attention. Intriguing flashbacks, sexy song-and-dance numbers, and (naturally) Fellini-esque romance punctuate this revived production.
