Chavisa Woods' characters know that heartbreak isn't fun. The New York writer/poet's latest work, Love Does Not Make Me Gentle or Kind, is a collection of interconnected short stories following the lives of women and girls in rural America. Exploring the ways that emotional wounds and star-crossed love can turn women into warriors and children into abusers, Woods' dark, wrenching stories make clear the damaging effects of hurt feelings. (A particularly moving piece revolves around the shades of an dysfunctional relationship between a young girl and her drunken father.) This afternoon, Woods visits Quimby's to read selections from her book.
