The Coen Brothers' first literary adaptation — a faithful rendition of a Cormac McCarthy novel, no less — uses naturalistic storytelling in its depiction of man's animalistic tendencies. The 2007 Academy Award winner for Best Picture is set amid the sparse west-Texas prairie, kicking into gear when Josh Brolin stumbles on a cache of heroin, a face-down corpse, and a briefcase containing two-million dollars. Of course, a cadre of villainous folks (chiefly, a coin-flipping maniac played by Javier Bardem) is on his trail, racking up dead bodies and frustrating Tommy Lee Jones. Scored by stomping boots and shotgun blasts, the film strips violence and greed to their roots in choice and chance.
