The tiny Baltic nation of Estonia has a tumultuous history, having been occupied by Nazi Germany before being absorbed into the Soviet Union — after centuries of other invasions. Directed by first-time filmmakers James Tusty and Maureen Castle Tusty with veteran documentarian Mike Majoros, this affecting, painstakingly researched film mixes rare archival footage with interviews with Estonian rebel leaders, statesmen, and citizens. Centering on the traditional Laulupidu song festival — where as many as 30,000 people sing in unison — and other mass gatherings in which Estonians defiantly sang the national anthems and patriotic folk songs banned by Soviet rule, The Singing Revolution is as much about the power of music as an inspiring, uniting force as it is about this country's path to independence.
