Film: Documentary At the Death House Door
-
- Still from At the Death House Door
In the wrong hands, Steve James' Hoop Dreams and Stevie could've been rote fodder for ESPN or Dateline — instead, they are two deeply affecting documentaries. Even with the films' meticulous editing and immense scope, their director's lack of self-promotion proves most refreshing. James' new project, At the Death House Door, tackles the capital-punishment issue with characteristic grace. Over a 15-year period, Reverend Carroll Pickett presided over nearly 100 executions as chaplain of a Huntsville, Texas prison. Convinced that at least one convict was innocent, he has since become a tireless advocate for the abolishment of capital punishment.
