If you weren't around for Friday Night Videos, you only know Was (Not Was) as perpetrators of the wedding-reception funk songs "Walk the Dinosaur" and "Spy in the House of Love." But all the while, they were churning out perplexing tunes like "Hello Dad... I'm in Jail" and collaborating with everyone from Frank Sinatra, Jr. to Wayne Kramer. (Disco junkies still talk about their early Ze singles with the same hushed tones reserved for Liquid Liquid or Arthur Russell.) Boo!, their first album in almost 20 years, is classic Was — twisted funk and smart-ass goof-rock that threatens to capsize at any moment, which makes it all the more thrilling.
