Film: Documentary Into Great Silence (2005)

It took more than a decade before this intensely private order of Carthusian monks agreed to open its doors to Philip Gröning's camera. The resulting film, however, is an immersive documentary that forgoes both soundtrack and voiceover to capture the timeless monastic existence in haunting detail. Hidden away in the beautiful and brutal landscape of the French Alps,  the monks reveal themselves to Gröning as they pray, work, cook, and even partake in a snowball fight.
