For decades, the International Museum of Surgical Science has spotlighted the macabre wonders of invasive surgery. But along with historical displays of bizarre artifacts and odes to shudder-inducing operations, this shrine to medical magic has an ongoing — if little known — contemporary-art program. In the current exhibition, ExtraSensory, artist Christa Donner re-envisions the inner workings of the body, mapping out alternatives to anatomical facts. Donner's colorful paper wall sculptures take the form of tangled innards that tumble free, while a collection of photographs and zines — created in collaboration with a group of rural teenagers — turns memories of pain into whimsical and disconcerting explorations of the body's hidden depths.
