Film Last Year at Marienbad (1961)

Stanley Kubrick, Michel Gondry, and even George Romero owe a debt to Alain Resnais' new-wave classic Last Year at Marienbad. The film follows a nameless man (Giorgio Albertazzi) trying to convince a nameless woman (Delphine Seyrig) that they'd met the year before in the same opulent hotel — but the woman has no recollection of ever meeting him. A cascading series of cryptic, nonlinear flashbacks, it blurs the line between truth and memory; dark figures dance and play, repeating the same conversations as if merely going through the motions (like zombies?), while the frantic organ score and chiaroscuro lighting conjure a terrifying, beautiful mood.
