There was a time when Chicago was home to dozens of piano bars — dark, smoky, raucous settings for late-night cocktails and conversation. Buddy Charles played most of 'em, including the Drake's Coq d'Or, and spent a legendary 18 years at the Acorn on Oak, a favorite Royko haunt. With influences ranging from Fats Waller to Art Tatum, Charles' vast repertoire and impassioned performances have made him an award-winning local favorite for over 50 years. Tonight, he talks with Rick Kogan about music, Chicago, and the fine art created in the shadows of early-morning saloons.
