On the new Poisonous Times, the Old Haunts carry on the proud tradition of Pacific Northwest garage rock. Their third record for Kill Rock Stars and first with former Bikini Kill drummer Tobi Vail, Times tightens the songcraft and keeps the arrangements fuss-free. But don't expect the relentless primitivism of the Sonics, Dead Moon, or any number of other Oregon/Washington State heroes; singer/guitarist Craig Extine weaves a tangle of fluid melodies, and Vail's workmanlike drumming is all cool composure. Extine's yelp might still give you Marquee Moon flashbacks, but now it comes with a healthy dollop of exaggerated, Darby Crash-style snot.
