Film Son of Rambow

Young Will lives in a religious household that forbids television or film. But once school bully Lee exposes him to a bootleg copy of First Blood, all is lost. The two embark on a mad mission to film an homage to Rambo, packed with their own stunts and costarring a waggish French exchange student who comes with his own fan club. Slapstick, if not downright silly, Son of Rambow works because its actors commit to the premise with a fierce gravity that only serves to rachet up the film's already high comedy. It also helps that writer/director Garth Jennings displays a strong aversion to treacle.
