Despite a revolving-door lineup of no less than 15 (sometimes closer to 30) members and an album dedicated to free-jazz legend Albert Ayler, Dark Meat are much more accessible than their bio might lead you to believe. Sure, nearly every song on the Vice-reissued Universal Indians dive-bombs into "Sister Ray" cacophony at some point; but with a Southern-fried groove never out of reach, it's just their scream-and-bash way of writing memorable bridges and codas. The Athens collective tosses in scraps of Neutral Milk Hotel (former Elephant 6'ers have contributed), Rolling Stones, and especially Funhouse-era Iggy. It's a maximalist blend that never skimps on the pop.
