As you enter downtown from the south side, Lake Shore Drive's skyline view is truly breathtaking. The skyscrapers swell with civic pride, lending the moment a fist-in-the-air excitement. But it's a fleeting experience — within minutes, you're snarled in traffic, cursing cab drivers, and deafening noise. Fortunately, once a year, the thruway closes down, leaving thousands of cyclists to take in the view unmolested. It's both healthy and environmentally conscious, but the real draw is one heckuva pretty city. Post-ride fare includes Beatles tribute band American English, Goose Island Brew Pub breakfast options, bike-polo demonstrations, and a Clif Kids Zone for the little 'uns.
