Declaring a band "darlings" is one of the music press' more backhanded compliments. But really, there's no better way to describe Los Campesinos! and their outsized twee. Piling up glockenspiels, violins, handclaps, keys, and buzzing guitar, their debut Hold on Now, Youngster... has drawn comparisons to the lovable lo-fi of old K Records singles. (It would be almost impossible for it not to — the band actually name-drops the label on "Knee Deep at ATP.") The knowing indie references nearly outnumber the shouted, boy/girl choruses (of which there are lots, thankfully), but they're always delivered in endearingly earnest homage.
