French Kicks may be the underdogs of Brooklyn's post-post-punk scene, but at their best, they rival the Walkmen or the Strokes. On their new album, Swimming, they further develop the pop leanings of previous records with an energetic mix of vocal harmonies and terse, shuffling rhythms. Still, openers Frightened Rabbit are poised to steal the show: the Glasgow-based indie-pop group shifts between moments of melodic tenderness and rave-up rowdiness with uncommon agility. While Frightened Rabbit's memorable hooks are genuine tear-jerkers on their own, their clever, pointed lyrics are a reason to listen closely.
