Art Mario Ybarra, Jr.: Take Me Out No Man Is an Island

In his first solo museum exhibition, Mario Ybarra, Jr. presents a witty comparison of Chicago and Los Angeles through the exploits of William Wrigley, Jr.. Evidently, Wrigley Field's namesake got around; Wrigley built another stadium in LA and owned nearby Catalina Island, where he held Cubs spring training and entertained celebrities. Ybarra is both playful and critical in this expansive installation, which includes drawings, wooden models, and a soundtrack. Its humorous elements have political and social undercurrents, touching on displays of power and the artist's experience as a Mexican American growing up in California.

– Karsten Lund

Note: Ybarra kicks off his exhibition with a lecture on Thur May 29 (6pm) at the Art Institute's Price Auditorium.
