Thousands of bands imitate Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer, but few do so with the finesse of Dead Meadow. The power trio is as comfortable playing spacious psychedelia as biker-friendly shuffles, with heavy guitars leading the way. Their last couple of albums (Feathers and Old Growth) contain some of their most concise songwriting, with singer Jason Simon's nasal coo nestled in among the swirling fuzz. It's possible that the band's turn toward accessibility came with relocating from Washington, DC, to Los Angeles — regardless, Dead Meadow are still reliably huge in concert, with long-spiraling jams that celebrate the power of the almighty riff.
