Film It Always Rains on Sunday (1947)
Every year, several decades-old, rarely seen films appear with restored prints and end up on critics' top-ten lists. Robert Hamer's It Always Rains on Sunday might be one of 2008's chosen few — this year's Killer of Sheep or Army of Shadows. A grim, day-in-the-life snapshot of post-war Britain from Ealing Studios (Kind Hearts and Coronets; The Ladykillers), Sunday has enjoyed a deserved reappraisal. Googie Withers plays Rose Sandigate, a weary barmaid juggling domestic duties and the advances of her escaped-convict ex. A recent New York run elicited comparisons to both Robert Altman — for the film's multiple-character panorama — and the working-class malaise of "kitchen sink" dramas.
