With a penchant for shimmering feedback and reverb-drenched arrangements, Film School are adherents of the late-'80s/early-'90s shoegaze tradition. Although some find the band's pitch-perfect homage to bands like the Swirlies and My Bloody Valentine overly academic, it's precisely their close study of the genre's beau ideals (and addition of dream-pop flourishes like string and keyboard lines) that makes their performances so transfixing. Live, the quintet's ethereal vocals, gossamer melodies, and furiously loud guitars coalesce into an indistinguishable swirl of sound that rivals Kevin Shields' most gorgeous rackets. Tonight, Film School return to promote their third album, 2007's Hideout.
