What effect did Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species have on the development of early modern architecture? What can we make of the canon-splitting divide between the secular and religious justifications for natural forms in architectural ornament? These are the tough questions posed in the Block Museum's Design in the Age of Darwin, an exhibition curated by Northwestern University art historian Stephen F. Eisenman. The show addresses these complex issues through prints, drawings, design objects, and furniture, and features the work of architects and designers such as Frank Lloyd Wright, C.F.A. Voysey, Louis Sullivan, and William Morris.
