Singer/songwriter Basia Bulat may look young and earnest on the cover of her Rough Trade debut, Oh My Darling, but don't let the cuteness confuse you: there's a hearty vigor boiling below. Bulat surrounds her earthy, Jolie Holland-esque trill with marching-band dynamics to match fellow Canadian wonder-rockers like Arcade Fire and the New Pornographers. Quieter tunes such as "Little Waltz," meanwhile, possess an easygoing tenderness. In a few moments of blue-eyed schmaltz, Bulat's record may seem overly eager to please, but live, she's got enough sparkle to bring it all off with genuine passion. Tonight, she gets the caravan started for gypsy rockers Devotchka.
