After combing the American mythos of early-to-mid-'70s rock in Mystery Train, Greil Marcus looked to Europe in search of punk's hidden lineage. Spurning the usual tabloid punk tell-all, his Lipstick Traces found surprising links between Johnny Rotten and movements such as dadaism and the Situationist International. Now, the local Pavement Group has adapted the book's sprawling genealogy into a tight, theatrical drama. As rich as Marcus' analysis is, avant-garde antics and rockin' barre chords usually work better onstage; plus, each ticket to the show comes with a free PBR — a savvy bit of marketing that would make Malcolm McLaren proud.
