Performing Arts: Theatre Bloody Bess: A Tale of Piracy and Revenge

Bloody Bess isn't a pirate story for children, and it's definitely not your standard, polite downtown theater — the show's full of swashbuckling swagger, clamoring action, and plenty of sex and violence. The plot is simple: pirates kidnap the governor's daughter, who is betrayed by her father's successor. She eventually becomes captain of the pirate band and hatches her revenge. First performed in the '70s by Chicago's now-defunct Organic Theater Company, Bloody Bess adds radical-feminist themes to its buccaneering — and ends on a dark, disquieting note.
