Art Collecting for Chicago: Prints, Drawings, and Patronage
-
- Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Two Women, Courtesy the Art Institute of Chicago, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Freehling
You may not have noticed, but the Art Institute's Department of Prints and Drawings has been running in stealth mode — its world-class collection was tucked away while new galleries were constructed. Now, the department reemerges, and, while the inaugural exhibition in the revamped space may have a stuffy-sounding title, it's infused with exceptional energy and ingenuity. The exhibition features a diverse array of international artists, including German heavy hitters Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke, comics legend Robert Crumb, and outsider artist Martín Ramírez — whose unusual visions combine traditional Mexican folk art with modern icons.
