Touring bands must turn right to the "W" page in their rolodexes when they stop in Chicago. It seems like every time a good, noisy act announces a date, Warhammer48k is there, threatening to upstage the headliner with their bug-eyed scuzz-rock. (They've opened for Indian Jewelry and Times New Viking recently, to name just a couple.) The band would sound perfect beside anything from Providence noise to California stoner rock, but there's something distinctively (and refreshingly) Midwestern about their serrated Jesus Lizard bass lines, Albini-esque sheet-metal crash cymbals, and total lack of pretense. 2006's An Ethereal Oracle plays like the missing link between old Touch and Go "pigfuck" and accessible, Load-style squall.
