Art Alex Katz: Subject to Reversal

At 81, Alex Katz has only recently emerged as one of America's major contemporary artists. The Richard Gray Gallery shows why the artist's profile has risen with a new collection of his wry back-of-head portraits. His flat, colorful style sometimes recalls David Hockney's cool Bigger Splash-era oils and the austerity of an Edward Hopper landscape, but the blend of illustration, figurative painting, and classic framing is singular to Katz's work. And Subject to Reversal — which subverts portraiture's reputation as a form that illuminates an "inner essence" — goes much further conceptually than the later work of many of his Pop Art colleagues.
