Art: Photography Beyond the Backyard

Recognized as a fixture in Americana, the backyard has, over the previous two decades, become a space favored almost as much by postmodern thinkers as suburban families. Though none of the artists (culled from the museum's permanent collection and its Midwest Photographers Project), pay direct homage to David Lynch's Blue Velvet (or the ear that protagonist Jeffrey Beaumont finds behind his house), some of Beyond the Backyard's most interesting photographs invoke a similar eeriness, like Nic Nicosia's black-and-white print of three children burning a tree in the backyard. Kohei Yoshiyuki's series The Park addresses issues of space, sex, and privacy, capturing "amorous" couples in the brush of public parks while voyeurs typically look on.
