Neo-psychers the Black Angels plumb a pretty wide range of obscurist delights, cozying up to everyone from Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine to the 13th Floor Elevators and the Velvet Underground. While there's plenty of garage in their gaze, it's the classic psych-outs that really eek out the eyeballs. Shoegaze-y, space-rock fuzz washes over more errant elements, giving the group a smooth-ride vibe that's more warm caress than blues-rock boogie. That's not to say this one's a sleeper: if the band's recent stint opening for Queens of the Stone Age proved anything, it was that these retro-obsessed wonders also remember how to rock.
