Film The Golden Compass

For a film ostensibly geared toward children, The Golden Compass, based on the first installment of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, inspired a great deal of excitement among adults, not to mention its fair amount of controversy — namely because some Christian institutions called for a boycott of the movie, which they contend encourages atheism. Accusations aside, this was one of the better blockbusters of 2007 — a visually compelling, totally self-sustaining world that blends CGI and live action with a grace rarely achieved. Nicole Kidman stars in her ideal role: an icy woman of means who hides behind her impeccable manners to conduct nefarious experiments on children.
