Music: Rock/Pop The Aluminum Group

While the brief '90s vogue for Burt Bacharach ballads and lounge grooves is long gone, the Aluminum Group continue to fruitfully mine the subtleties of orchestral pop. Brothers John and Frank Navin have created a sound that harkens back to lush '70s AM-radio music, though their affection for electronic curlicues and odd time signatures walks a fine line between ambient and jazz. In other words, as much as they want to channel the Carpenters, the Aluminum Group can't help but fall firmly in the tradition of fellow Chicagoan post-rockers Tortoise and the Sea and Cake.
