Film: Documentary Black Diamonds (2006)
Documentary Black Diamonds exposes one of the worst ongoing environmental disasters you've never heard of: mountaintop-removal mining. Preferred by the coal industry for its speed, effectiveness, and low cost, MRM uses high-powered explosives to blast through the Appalachians, extracting the profitable fossil fuel inside. The rubble and debris rain down upon poor rural communities that lack the political clout to stop the process, while polluting water supplies, lowering property values, and destroying wildlife populations. Tonight's screening is followed by a discussion with representatives from the Clean Power Campaign and the Environmental Law & Policy Center.
