Reading Grandmaster Flash: The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash: My Life, My Beats

Grandmaster Flash's pioneering turntable techniques — which include cutting, backspinning, and mixing — helped birth hip-hop, and eventually earned him (and his group, the Furious Five) a spot in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. However, Flash recently admitted that his innovations weren't always respected: "It was just ridicule after ridicule after ridicule," he revealed. This candor marks much of Flash's new memoir, The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash: My Life, My Beats, which recounts his hardscrabble childhood, rise to stardom, fall into drug addiction, and 12-year journey to redemption. Tonight, Flash, joined by WGCI DJ Timbuktu, discusses his book and the lasting influence of his work.
