- Aspiring Broadway composer/lyricists trying to attract angel investors usually consider more contemporary material than Johannes Gutenberg's invention of the printing press. Yet that's the sputtering star to which playwrights Bud Davenport and Doug Simon hitch their dreams in Gutenberg! The Musical!, a meta-show that depicts the creators pitching their big idea to a potential backer. Because there is no cast, Bud and Doug play all the characters themselves, including the heroic Gutenberg, an evil monk, the lovelorn Helvetica, and two singing rats. A polished off-Broadway hit with clever songs and appealing performances, Gutenberg! is an arch commentary on the inherent absurdity of the creative process. – Ben Bass
