The penultimate installment of Lloyd Dobler Gallery's summer lecture series features Chicago photographer John Opera. Opera's conceptual approach and restrained formalism inform enigmatic, often abstract works. Arresting images of the natural world populate the eerie, almost painterly Black Sun III, and a series of Interior Abstractions contain stark, black-and-white geometries that reference minimalism and op art. Much of his work investigates oft-referenced art-historical and cultural touchstones, while hinting at photography's expansive possibilities.
