Many critics have been quick to claim harrowing Romanian import 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days as the best foreign film of the past year. During 24 hours of the communist Ceauşescu regime's last days, student Gabita and her roommate Otilia undergo the felonious, life-threatening ordeal of obtaining a black-market abortion. The dialogue is sparse and hushed, the lighting unflattering and bile-green, and the camera's lens startlingly unflinching. Beneath all of the purposeful mundanity, however, lurk real-life stakes that reward in a way no Hollywood thriller would currently dare approximate.
