Music: Rock/Pop dd/mm/yyyy w/ Cacaw and Bret Gand Is Dead

Their moniker screams "willfully obtuse" (it even landed them on The Onion's Worst Band Names of '07 list) and their whiplash time signatures would easily kill a lesser band's groove — but, compared to a lot of other math-spazz combos, dd/mm/yyyy are downright poppy. Les Savy Fav fans ought to appreciate the vocals' quick jump from monotone ramble to full-throated shouts, while keyboards, sax, and omnichord amplify the feeling of open-armed over-stimulation. (Plus, their relentless touring makes Black Flag look like Jandek.) Like a Great White Northern cousin of Japanther or the Mae Shi, this Toronto five-piece does skittish abstraction with a danceable edge.
