Film California Dreamin' (Nesfarsit) (2007)

With multiple Romanian films grabbing awards at 2007's Cannes Film Festival, the critics nearly anointed a "New Wave on the Black Sea." And although it's a stretch to call it a movement, the country certainly has turned out an unprecedented number of remarkable films in recent years. Cristian Nemescu's prize-winning California Dreamin' tackles bleak themes (bureaucracy, corruption) with a solid dose of dark humor. Set in Romania in 1999, during the Kosovo war, the film revolves around a crew of American soldiers whose train is detained in a small town. The soldiers are feted by the locals (a Dracula-themed floor show!), but the situation builds to a heated climax.
