Motor's unjustly slept-on Unhuman album is the kind of dance record purists love to hate. It's hooky, poppy, and unabashedly retro, with airless production and a single hyperactive emotional register. But when that booming, squelchy sound works so well in the club, most quibbles seem pointless. Motor's clean house beats and vocoder fetish make good on their album title, but they also dirty things up with the kind of buzzing analog synths that gave Daniel Miller and Fad Gadget's label its reputation. Motor's live set at Smartbar will be all the more memorable when you get to shake your ass at a naysayer's wagging finger.
