Music: Rock/Pop Aleks & the Drummer w/ Woodhands, Chandeliers, and Yellow Cakes

While the music press tries to make sense of Scarlett Johansson's collection of Tom Waits covers, another record produced by TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek arrives tonight at Aleks & the Drummer's EP-release show. The local duo has only a sliver of Scarlett's fame, but discerning fans expect big things from the relative newcomers. Like a stripped-down, thawed-out Electrelane, Aleksandra Tomaszewska lays twisty Farfisa runs over drummer Deric Criss' Ege Bamyasi-inspired mix of taut timekeeping and manic fills. The way Aleks' spooky warble mingles with her circus-like keyboard lines can give you the creeps (in the best possible way), but the band's mesmerizing brand of minimalism is completely its own.
