In the current installment of the UBS 12x12 series, Mark Booth presents drawings and paintings that combine text with biomorphic forms and recall both cellular biology and speech bubbles. The phrases are often quizzical — the question, "what happened to his thoughts after they quietly exited the stage of his mind?" could be a snippet from a highly theoretical inner monologue. Booth sees his pieces as "maps of cognitive cul-de-sacs" or "charts of unstable memory," but they can also be downright funny, with lines like, "she gazed into her crystal bowel" or, "an organ solo that mars the very air." All of his musings conjure specific imagery, but they are open-ended enough to be interpreted in multiple ways.
