The Smart Museum and Seminary Co-op's 57th Street Books present this discussion of Theodore Dreiser's classic Sister Carrie and John French Sloan's paintings of New York City. In Dreiser's novel, a young woman moves to Chicago and then New York, being "kept" by her lovers until she succeeds as an actress. Because its immoral characters go unpunished, the book was a scandal and did not appear unaltered until 1981. Sloan, meanwhile, was a leading figure in the Ashcan School, creating highly realistic portraits of Manhattan's neighborhoods and their tenants before his death in 1951. The discussion focuses on Dreiser's scenes of urban female labor and Sloan's images of women at the turn of the century.
