Author and Northwestern University professor Miles Harvey broke onto the scene with the nonfiction tale of a maniacal map thief in The Island of Lost Maps. For his latest work, Painter in a Savage Land, Professor Harvey details the efforts of Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, the earliest-known European artist to travel to North America to depict the New World. The book recreates de Morgues' story, fleshing out a social ethnography of interactions between European explorers and Native Americans. Harvey reads tonight at Women & Children First, offering a glimpse of 16th-century America.
