- One of last year's most pleasant surprises, the earthy folk of North Carolina's Bowerbirds has made disciples out of everyone from Pitchfork to the Mountain Goats guru John Darnielle. Leaning on the poppier side of the recent folk revival, 2007's single "In Our Talons" provided a spirited blend of accordions, bass drums, and, yes, acoustic guitars. While leader Phil Moore's lispy lyrics seem a bit confusing on headphones, his sing-a-long choruses make infinitely more sense live. Tonight, Bowerbirds take their act to Schubas Tavern alongside local folkies the Thin Man and the I Ching Quartet. – Scott Tomford
